Winter camping does not have to be an ordeal and at Uncommon Journeys we have refined the experience to the point where it is downright fun!
The first key is to have an indoor area where you can warm up, socialize and dry damp clothes. We have created a solution for this with our Mountain Hardware Stronghold Basecamp Tent. This is a huge, double walled tent in which we place a “Tenessee turkey cooker” heater. This tent heater runs on propane and is capable of producing 150,000 BTU’s which means it can be – 40F outside and it will be a balmy +80F inside. The tent itself is huge and easily accommodates a group of 10 for dining and discussing the day’s adventures. Inside the tent, strung from the roof are drying lines on which we hang our damp gear to dry. With the cooker inside, synthetic gear dries in minutes ensuring a dry pair of gloves and a dry neck tube for the next day’s mushing.
Insulated “Crazy creek” chairs are provided for each guest so that you have a warm chair with plenty of back support on which to sit as we enjoy a mug of hot chocolate with a little Bailey’s Irish Cream liquor added for those who want a decadent end to their meal. And quite a meal it is. All our meals are prepared ahead of time by the same staff that prepare the incredible meals for the dining room at our Uncommon Journeys Wilderness Lodge. Beef Stroganoff, Pineapple-Cashew Chicken and Jumbo Prawn Linguini are just a couple of the meals we often enjoy on the trail. All the meals are vacuum sealed and as such ensure that we can have piping hot, delicious meals in a matter of minutes regardless of what Mother Nature has in store for us during the day. There are no dishes to wash and vegetarian and restrictive diets are easily accommodated. Best of all the servings are huge which means that that night’s sleep is guaranteed to be cozy as we burn off the huge amount of calories we devoured at dinner!
Sleeping is obviously a prime concern on these trips and we spare no expense to ensure that our guests enjoy a good night’s sleep. We provide the ultimate cold weather sleeping system (rated to -50C) which consists of 2 nested sleeping bags and the decadence of three sleeping pads. This means you are not only warm but sleeping on a comfortable “mattress” of closed cell foam.
All of the above, combined with sitting around a fire sipping your favorite drink under the dancing lights of Aurora Borealis adds up to a once in a lifetime winter camping experience like no other in the pristine wilderness of the Yukon.
