Poppy Has Arrived!

This July, we finally took possession of our prized new Morgan-Arab Horse named Poppy. Poppy has come to us by way of a ranch in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. She’s a chestnut with a white star on her face and stands 15 hands high. She is definitely high spirited and her endurance background has left no doubt that she will be able to ‘hoof it’ to our wilderness basecamp and back in one long day! So far, Rod has had several exciting runs on our local dog trails…fortunately; he has taken the precaution of wearing a riding helmet!

We are in the process of building a round pen for training Poppy and the other horses that we intend to acquire to allow us to use them to re-supply the basecamp during the spring, summer and fall. This past winter, we had the pleasure of having the entire Ebersole family from California join us for a dogsledding adventure. One of the Ebersole sons, Paul, has been a member of the US National Equestrian Team. Paul’s specialty is three-day eventing so he is very familiar with the challenges posed in cross-country runs. His advice for training both the horses and the dogs was much appreciated and we are sure that Poppy and her colleagues will benefit from his words of wisdom.

This summer, we will be joined by the Schenke family returning for another adventure, this time in Kluane National Park. Melissa and Megan are long time equestrian competitors and own their own horse, Scandal, in London Ontario. They have assured us that they will be bringing Poppy special treats and Poppy has asked us to spread the word to all of our future guests that she will happily accept gifts of any flavour!
