Horses coming to Uncommon Journeys!
In June of this year the staff of Uncommon Journeys Ltd. will be welcoming some different four-legged employees!
Two quarter horses will be coming to the homestead to live. These horses will be used to travel back and forth from our yurt basecamp. The past three years have seen the Ibex River surging at unseasonably high water levels, making the river crossing next to impossible with all terrain vehicles. These mountain horses will be used to ford the river and deliver supplies to the basecamp, as well as allowing staff to periodically check the electric fences which protect the yurts from the valley's resident grizzly bears!
The next litter of puppies will be raised with the horses so that they will be familiar enough with these animals to travel with us to the yurts with their dogpacks on. We will also use the horses to explore the valley in more detail, leading to the creation of more trails for use in the winter.
The barn is finished and will accommodate two horses and tack plus all the hay necessary to feed two horses during the year. The corrals are in the process of being built and will be at least five feet high, covered with predator fencing to keep out sleddogs and wolves alike! With two large corrals, a circular training ring and thousands of miles of trail to run on, these animals will be treated to the same level of care that their neighbors in the Uncommon dog yard enjoy.
Don't forget to bring an apple for our new staff on your next visit to the Homestead!
