AURORA CLASSIC DOG SLEDDING ADVENTURE - 7 DAYS

This week-long Aurora Classic dog sledding adventure begins on a Sunday in Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory.* After your arrival, we drive West for thirty minutes and arrive at the Uncommon Journeys Lodge, our home base for all our dog sledding trip departures.

After relaxing and freshening up, you will be outfitted with our deluxe dog sledding gear including parka, pants and boots. All of our guests are outfitted with expedition quality arctic clothing for our dogsledding adventures including Arctic parkas with fur ruffs, chomo-insulated bib pants, Weber-Malakov Sorel boots, and Apocalypse overmitts. While the average winter temperatures on our trips are between -10° and -25° degrees Celsius, we have had clients on Aurora trips in -40° C and they were never cold!

After suiting up, we treat you to a very fun “Mushing 101” lesson where you learn the ropes of braking, steering, commands and dog management. You then get to meet your dog sled team and begin to get acquainted with them and your sled.

Guests spend the first couple days going on daytrip dog sledding excursions from the Uncommon Journeys Lodge, getting used to their sled and their dog sled team. On Wednesday, we begin our mushing expedition to our comfortable Uncommon Journeys Yurt Basecamp 20 miles into the Yukon wilderness where we spend the next two nights. The Northern Lights can be a major highlight on our dog sledding trips and while they are unpredictable (generally appearing between September and April every year), the lucky visitor who sees them will never forget them.

On Thursday, the dogs get a well deserved rest and we go for a snowshoeing interpretive trip, returning to the camp for a sauna and celebratory feast! Friday we hitch our dog sleds up and head back to the Lodge, and Saturday we finish with the excitement of either dog sledding with new teams or trying our hand at dog sledding over a more technical trail. By the end of this week you will be mushing like a seasoned "Sourdough"!

PREPARE TO GO:

*It is recommended you arrive on Saturday one day early and overnight in Whitehorse (at your expense) to overcome jetlag, ensure your baggage arrives and to allow for the threat of missing a connection due to winter weather complications. If this is not convenient and you arrive on the Sunday flight, we will pick you up at the airport at the time of the flight's arrival. Many of our guests choose to spend an hour or so at the McBride Museum located in downtown Whitehorse as it is a fantastic introduction to the flora, fauna and history of the Yukon.
