Having paddled all across Alaska, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut ourselves, we believe that the Canada and the Yukon Territory has the finest canoeing in the world for novice and intermediate paddlers. We can customize a Yukon canoeing trip based on your group’s paddling skill level or to a specific river route. We are also happy to provide you with a menu of paddling options for your canoeing adventure and will help you choose the appropriate itinerary whether you are a family with young children or are more experienced and looking for the thrill of white water canoeing.
The Snake, Wind, Hart, South MacMillan, McQuesten, Takhini and Yukon are just some of the trips we have run for guests in the past. For some of our groups fishing is a passion. We can equip you with the fly and spin fishing gear and local secrets necessary to ensure a few delicious shore lunches of Arctic Grayling or Lake Trout! In all cases we will ensure that your group enjoys a safe and memorable adventure. Our guides are certified outdoor educators who combine a love of teaching paddling skills with a passion for sharing the wilderness in which you will travel. All of the paddling and camping gear will be provided for your trip and our menus will not suffer just because we are away from the kitchen! A minimum group size of three guests is required for these trips, which have ranged from two days to three weeks in the past.
Journey through a terrain rich in local history: Aboriginal First Nations, the Klondike Gold Rush, the Northwest Mounted Police “Lost Patrol”, the fur trade. This adventure of a lifetime begins on the spirited Takhini River, where guests will get their first taste of swift water. After a day or two of flat and white water training, you’ll be ready to tackle the challenges of this river adventure. Then you’ll fly by Single Otter from Mayo to McKlusky Lake (approximately 150 km northeast of Mayo in the heart of the Wernecke Mountains). As the floatplane gathers speed skimming across the lake, be prepared for the most spectacular view of the vast Yukon wilderness. For the next 10 days your group will paddle some of the clearest waters in the Yukon, the pristine Wind River.
The Wind River is part of the Peel River Watershed, traditional territory of the Nacho N’y’ak Dun and Tetl’it Gwich’in First Nations. This river boasts swift currents with sharp bends as well as the occasional Class II rapid. Paddlers must pay close attention as sometimes the relatively flat surface hides the trickiest and most technical water. The Wind is renowned for its spectacular hiking terrain; the alpine here is remarkably accessible and the group will spend a day or two on alpine day hikes seeking out the
resident grizzly, moose, caribou, wolverine, and Dall sheep populations in this watershed. Arctic poppies dot the hillsides with colour and demonstrate their incredible adaptability to the short summer season by rotating their cup-shaped flower to follow the sun across the sky. The Arctic Grayling is abundant and we’ll do a little fishing on the trip if you wish. Upon reaching the mighty Peel River we will paddle downstream to “Taco Bar” for our last evening on the river. We will be picked up by float plane the next morning, for our flight back to Mayo and our waiting vehicle. Leaving the land of the midnight sun, you’ll take memories with you that won’t soon be forgotten.
We’ll do as much fishing on the trip as you desire. With close to 24 hour daylight, the hours are endless!
